A Clinical Review on Post-operative Enterocutaneous Fistula


Abstract
A clinical review was made on 68 cases of post-operative enterocutaneous fistula which had been treated at Department of Surgery, Wallace Memorial Hospital from June. 1981 to June 1991.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1) In 68 cases, 53 cases were male and 15 cases were female. The ratio for male to female was 3.5 to 1 and the most common age distribution was the 30's.
2) The stomach and duodenum was the most frequent site of postoperative enterocutaneous fistula.
3) The most common cause of postoperative enterocutaneous fistula was surgical complication(65.7%).
4) As diagnostic method, 77.9% of all cases was performed by fistulography and the accuracy rate of fistulography was 94.3%.
5) The latent duration of fistula was within 10 days in 79.4%.
6) The most frequent complication was skin digestion(70%) and followed by fluid-electrolyte imbalance(50%), wound infection(45.6%),and other.
7) As for the treatment of enterocutaneous fistula, 61.8% was treated by conservation treatment and 38.2% was treated by operative treatment. The spontaneous closure rate was 57.4%.
8) The overal death was 10.3%. The most common cause of death was sepsis.
